Why Mini Books Are Perfect for Kids (and the Planet)
Miniature books feel like toys, which makes them instantly appealing to kids. At the same time, they are:
- A great way to talk about scale: “If a real book is this big, how small should our mini version be?”
- A low‑cost project: you mainly need paper, a printer, and free Canva.
- More eco‑friendly than buying new plastic mini brands: you reuse paper, ink you already own, and can even repurpose scrap paper.
You can start by showing your kids one of their regular books, measuring its height and width, and then deciding together what fraction or percentage of that size their mini book will be. That simple conversation turns a craft into a maths lesson.
How to Make a Mini Book in Canva Using Scale Factor
When you make a mini book in Canva, you’re really following one simple process: design a book cover and inside pages at a smaller scale, then print, cut, and assemble them into a tiny book. By choosing a scale factor (for example, making everything 4 times smaller than the original size), you and your kids can recreate the look of mini brands books without buying more plastic. You design the miniature cover in Canva using that scale factor, design the inside pages at the same scale, then put them together so the finished book looks like a realistic mini version of the real thing.
Use Scale Factor to Design Tiny Covers
Create a Mini Book by Dividing by 4
For our Mini Brands style books, we measured a real book and then divided the measurements by 4 to get the perfect miniature size. This turned into a great maths moment: we talked about what a quarter is, and how you can find a quarter by halving a number, then halving it again. Because 2×2=42×2=4, this “divide by 2 and divide by 2 again” strategy made sense to the kids, even when we were working with decimals.
We also rounded to 1 decimal place so the numbers were easy to work with and to transfer into centimetres and millimetres. Here’s the step‑by‑step process we used:
- Use a ruler to measure the height, width, and depth (the spine) of the actual book.
- Halve each measurement, then halve again to find one quarter of the original size.
- Round each result to one decimal place so it’s simple to type into Canva and to mark in centimetres and millimetres on paper.
Those scaled‑down measurements become the size of your mini book cover and pages in Canva, so your finished mini isn’t just small—it’s actually a true scaled‑down version of the real book.
How to Make a Foldable Mini Book from One Sheet
Set Up Your Mini Book Template in Canva
Start with your basic setup video:
- Open Canva and create a design.
- Choose a custom size that matches your printer paper:
- US Letter: 8.5 x 11 inches
- A4: 8.27 x 11.69 inches
- This is your single “sheet of paper” where your mini book will live.
If you want to bring in more maths, link it back to the book you measured earlier. Once you’ve worked out the mini cover height and width by dividing the real book by 4, you can ask your child:
“With these mini measurements, how many little pages could we fit along the height of our A4 sheet? And how many along the width?”
Then you can:
- Compare the A4 height to your mini book height to estimate how many mini pages fit in a column.
- Compare the A4 width to your mini book width to estimate how many mini pages fit across.
That way, they see how the measurements they calculated (using the scale factor of 4) connect directly to how you arrange the pages on the sheet in Canva.
Make Miniature Books with Shapes in Canva
On your virtual piece of paper, turn on rulers and guides in Canva. Go to File, settings, show rulers and guides.
Instructions for Front and Back Pages
- Use a square and manipulate the height and width to the size of your scaled-down version.
- Make this square white and give it a stroke, which is an outline, of one. You will find the stroke widths in the toolbar; it looks like stacked lines.
- Duplicate the first rectangle you created; these two rectangles will make the front and back covers.
- Duplicate another rectangle. You will keep the height but change the width to the width of the book’s spine.
- Align the front cover, spine, and back cover side by side to make the cover of the book.
- Highlight all three rectangles and select ‘group’ to group them.
Design Your Mini Book Pages
Use the Shape of the Book Cover to Make Inside Pages

Step By Step Instructions
- Duplicate either the front or back cover page. These are the larger rectangles. (If they’re grouped together, you can duplicate the group, ungroup it, and remove the middle rectangle.)
- Manoeuvre the two rectangles side by side and group them together. (You do not need the rectangle for the spine of the book; this would make the pages longer than the book.)
- Group these pages together by highlighting and selecting ‘group’.
- Duplicate your design for the inside pages. I typically use four for a book of this size, which gives me eight pages. However, I fit as many as I can on, allowing for the print to crop the edges, and we save these blank pages to make mini menus, worksheets, booklets, coloring books, and mini birthday cards; the ideas are endless.

Add Text, Images, and Mini Details
Understanding the Layout
Before you design your book cover note, which will be the front and back cover, because of the folding, the flat layout looks “mixed up”. To keep it clear for kids, fold a blank sheet as an example to show how the design on the right side becomes the top page of the mini book.
Finding The Full Book Cover
We looked for full book covers online using both Google and Pinterest. Pinterest worked best for us, but you may need to try both searches depending on the book you want to turn into a mini.
Finding The Full Book Cover Tips:
- Type the name of the book, followed by the full book cover
- On Pinterest, also look at the similar searches that automatically come up to find more full book covers.
- Save the image and import it into Canva.
If You Can’t Find the Full Book Cover
If you can’t find the full book cover (which happens to us a lot), you can still make a great mini book. Save the front cover image and upload it to Canva. Once it’s in your design, you can create the missing parts yourself.
- Use the left rectangles or shapes to extend the cover.
- Click the colour picker and choose a shade from the Photo colours section so it matches the original cover.
- Keep it simple with one solid colour, or layer multiple Canva elements to create a custom back cover and spine from scratch.
If you’re working on small details, use the zoom controls at the bottom of Canva to increase the percentage so you can see your miniature book cover clearly while you design.
Create a Mini Writing Exercise with a Mini Review
Instead of the back cover, you can personalise your mini book and write a mini review or summary by adding a text element.
Tips For You Mini Review
- While you type a mini review, use the toolbar at the bottom to make your design larger by increasing your percentage.
- Use a clear, readable font.
- Play with your font size in the toolbar to make a tiny but readable font.
Designing the Book’s Spine
With Canva you have the tools to create small writing and graphics, so designing this small rectangle becomes easier. Here’s what we did to personalise this section.
- Selected a text element and added the title.
- Choose a font and size.
- Rotated the font and centered it in the rectangle.

Download and Print Your Mini Book
When you’re ready:
- Click Share → Download in Canva.
- Select PDF Print for good quality. (A pro account lets you download CMYK, the best for professional printing; a free account lets you download RGB).
- Keep the size matched to your paper.
Print the design at “Actual size” so the fold lines up. You can talk about scale here too: if you accidentally print at 50%, your mini book becomes even more miniature, and you can measure the difference.
Fold Your Mini Book from One Sheet
Now fold your sheet into an 8‑page mini book
- Use scissors to carefully cut out the mini book cover and each set of inside pages. Remember that each section you cut out contains two rectangles side by side; the line in the middle is a fold line, not a cut line.
- Use a sharp pencil and ruler to draw a guideline on the back side of the front and back covers. I use a sharp pencil because it makes it easier to fold.
- Use the ruler to help fold the guidelines.
- Use a sharp pencil and a ruler to fold and crease the centre lines of the inside pages. For this section, you just fold the paper in half.
- Stack four aligned inside pages.
- Spread glue onto the inside of the spine using a small tool, like a paintbrush, and insert the stack of inside pages. This is your mini bookbinding.
You now have a mini book made from one sheet of paper. If you’re teaching maths, you can count pages together, talk about symmetry, and compare the size to the original sheet.
Eco‑Friendly, Maths‑Rich Ways to Use Your Mini Books
Here are some ideas that tie together miniature books, maths, and the environment:
